This is a notice from our Activities Director.

Good Afternoon,

After much consideration, MSD will need to close our Boys Varsity Basketball program for the 2026–2027 school year.

This was not an easy decision, as we understand the importance of providing our students with opportunities to participate in athletics and represent Michigan School for the Deaf. However, our current participation numbers are unfortunately too low to support a varsity program and provide our student-athletes with the competitive and meaningful experience they deserve.

We have carefully considered our options, but moving forward with such limited numbers would create significant challenges with practices, competition, player development, and maintaining a sustainable program throughout the season. As an Activities Department, we have a responsibility to make sure the teams we sponsor have enough participation and support to operate successfully.

While we are disappointed that we cannot offer boys varsity basketball this year, this decision is based on this year's participation and interest and does not mean that we are permanently ending boys basketball at MSD. We will continue to monitor student interest and participation and hope to rebuild the program when we have enough students to support a team.

We remain committed to providing our students with meaningful athletic opportunities and will continue supporting the programs that have sufficient participation to compete this school year.

Thank you for your understanding and continued support of MSD Athletics and our student-athletes.

Thank you,

Lindsay Lantagne (She/Her/Hers)

Activities Director
